§01What a concrete foundation slab is

A concrete foundation slab is a structural concrete slab used as the base of a building. It is the layer the building rests on: walls anchor into it, and vertical load transfers through it to the ground beneath.

The trade discipline is distinct from flatwork because a foundation slab is a structural element, not a wearing surface. It carries load rather than traffic. §02Footings and NC frost depth

A footing is the widened base of a foundation, sized to spread the vertical load of the building over a large enough area of ground that the ground can carry it, and set deep enough that the seasonal ground-freeze line sits above the footing rather than under it. The bottom of the footing has to sit below the local frost depth — the depth to which the ground freezes in the coldest part of an ordinary winter — because ground that freezes expands upward, and a footing sitting inside the freeze zone will be lifted with the freezing ground.

  • Vapor barrier. A polyethylene vapor barrier (typically 6 to 15 mil poly, depending on the specification) is laid over the compacted subgrade and the aggregate base before the slab is poured. The barrier keeps ground moisture from wicking up through the slab into the finished floor above it. Seams are lapped and taped, penetrations (plumbing rough-ins, electrical conduits) are sealed, and the barrier is turned up at the edges to meet the slab edge.

§04Thickened-edge details for load-bearing walls

Where a load-bearing wall will sit on a foundation slab, the concrete under the wall line is thicker than the field of the slab, so the wall's vertical load is spread over a wider bearing area. That thicker section is called a thickened edge, and it is the on-site detail that lets a slab-on-grade carry a wall without a separate strip footing running beneath.

Two common construction methods produce a thickened-edge slab:

  • Monolithic slab. The footing, the thickened edge and the field of the slab are poured in one continuous placement. The forms establish the footing depth at the perimeter and at any interior load-bearing lines; the field of the slab is placed at slab thickness across the rest of the pour; and the whole thing cures as one structural element. Monolithic slabs are faster to install and eliminate the cold-joint between footing and slab.
  • Two-pour system. The footings are formed and poured first, cured, and the slab is placed on top as a second pour. The two-pour system is used where the footing depth is significantly greater than the thickened-edge depth a monolithic pour could reasonably reach, or where the sequencing of the build (masonry stem walls between footing and slab, for example) calls for it.
