§01What large flatwork concrete is

Large flatwork concrete is a single continuous concrete pour above roughly 500 square feet: warehouse floors, commercial parking pads, large residential patios and courts, sport-court subgrades and equipment pads. It is distinct from smaller flatwork — walkways, small patios, ordinary residential driveways — because the joint spacing, the reinforcement, the placement equipment and the crew size are all different when a pour crosses that scale threshold.

§02What changes when a pour scales up

Four things change when a residential or light-commercial pour crosses roughly 500 square feet:

  1. Placement. Ready-mix cannot be reached to the middle of a large pad from a chute alone. Larger pours are typically placed by concrete pump (line pump for smaller-scale, boom pump for larger) that can reach the middle of the pad from the truck at the edge.
  2. Crew size. A single-truck driveway pour can be finished by a small crew. A large pour has to be screeded, floated and finished continuously across a wider face; that requires more hands on the slab, working in a coordinated sequence to keep pace with the placement rate.
  3. Joint plan. Larger slabs need more control joints, spaced closer together in absolute area but at similar rules of thumb — the joint plan is set before the pour, not decided after.
  4. Thickness and reinforcement. The load class the pad will carry drives thickness; the thickness drives reinforcement; the reinforcement drives joint depth. A design change at any of those levels cascades to the others.

§03Joint spacing rules

Control joints — cuts or tooled lines that predetermine where the slab will crack as it cures and later moves — are the primary defense against random cracking on a large slab. The ordinary rule of thumb in the trade is that joint spacing should be no more than 24 to 36 times the slab thickness in inches, expressed in feet.
